TOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas State High School Activities Association announces Rod Garman of Topeka, Kansas will join its staff on July 1, 2018 as an Assistant Executive Director. Garman was selected in a national search. He will succeed David Cherry, who is retiring from the KSHSAA staff after 22 years of faithful service.
Garman’s primary responsibilities will be the administration of interscholastic activities including Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Swimming & Diving, Student Council and Scholars Bowl, as well as assisting with general administration of the KSHSAA.
“Mr. Garman has a diverse background and is known across our great state as a respected and exemplary educator, an advocate for students and staff in schools he served. He is an outstanding choice to fulfill the duties so capably administered by Mr. Cherry,” said KSHSAA Executive Director – Elect, Bill Faflick.
For the past twenty-five years, Garman has served with passion and vision as a teacher, coach, athletic director, principal, and district administrator. Most recently, Garman has worked in the Topeka-Seaman School District (USD 345) as the Director of Elementary Education (2017-present), the Director of Secondary Education (2015-17), Assistant Director of Curriculum (2014-15) and as Principal of North Fairview Elementary (2011-14). During that tenure, Garman served as the Seaman Boys Head Swim Coach (2012-present) and Girls Head Swim Coach (2016-present). Prior to his work in Topeka, Garman was an administrator and teacher/coach in Marion (K-6, Principal 2007-11), Minneola (K-8 Principal and AD, 2003-07), and Windsor, CO (teacher, 2001-03). Garman started his professional career as a teacher at Elmont Elementary in the Topeka-Seaman school district (1993-2001). Garman has been a school and/ or club swimming coach since 1991.
Garman is a native of Kiowa, Kansas and a graduate of South Barber High School. Garman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Drama from Bethel College in 1990 and a Bachelor of Elementary Education degree in 1993 from Washburn University. In 2001, he completed a Masters of Educational Administration degree from Washburn University.
As a teacher, coach and administrator, Garman is widely known across Kansas. He maintains membership and has served as an officer in United School Administrators of Kansas (including a term as president, 2011-12), has participated in the KASB Leadership for Tomorrow (Class of 2016), the Kansas Educational Leadership Institute Advisory Council (2011-14) and is a member of Kansas Association of Elementary School Principals (2003-present) and National Association of Elementary School Principals (2011-present). Additionally, Garman has been honored as the National Distinguished Principal for Kansas (2013), KAHPERD Administrator of the Year (2016) as well as the Kansas 5-1A Boys Swim & Dive Coach of the Year (2016, 2018).
Garman and his wife Kristin will remain in Topeka as he joins the KSHSAA staff. The Garman’s twin sons will graduate from Topeka-Seaman this spring.
