On April 28th, 2018, Kaw Sports, LLC is hosting the first annual ultra-endurance bicycle race through the rugged and scenic High Plains and Gypsum Hills of Southern Kansas. The Open Range 200k course will start in Pratt, Kansas and take racers through the historic community of Medicine Lodge before winding its way along red dirt roads and through the sleepy town of Sun City as they complete a 200 km (125 mile) journey. Racers will encounter soft, rolling hills and steeper, undulating terrain full of mesas and buttes unlike anywhere else in the state. In 2012, Bicycling Magazine named the Gypsum Hills as the Kansas winner and one of “The 50 Best Rides in America”. In addition to the 200 km course, there will also be a 100 km, non-competitive option available.
For our inaugural year, we are forecasting 150-200 racers to enter the event but will not be surprise if we reach our cap of 400. With family members added, we expect 300-500 people in attendance. We are looking to make this an annual race with the potential to grow much larger. The race registration was officially opened on December 15th and currently (1/10/18) we have 108 racers already registered. Registration continues until April 15th or when we have 400 riders. Racers are coming from all over the country including: Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado, New Mexico, and Florida.
Proceeds from this year’s race will benefit Pratt Public School Foundation, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to enhancing the lives of students by providing experiences and equipment not otherwise available through state and federal funding.
