POOL PARTY TO CELEBRATE THE RE-OPENING OF A HISTORICAL SUMMER DESTINATION

Southern Pioneer Electric to throw a pool party celebrating the re-opening of Hardtner Swimming Pool.

Hardtner, KS-July 31, 2013- – Giving back to the communities that Southern PioneerElectric’s employees and consumers live in is something that is not taken lightly. A little over a year ago, the H.U.G.S team (Helping Us Give to Society) was formed to help Southern Pioneer do just that – give back. On August 5th, 2013 Southern Pioneer-H.U.G.S. Team members will be soaking up the sun, feeding the public and giving away beach towels at the Hardtner Swimming Pool in Hardtner, KS from noon to two p.m. Free swimming will be from one to five p.m.

The Hardtner pool was built in 1936 by “Uncle” Jake Achenbach to provide therapy for a local girl afflicted with polio. Hardtner’s local doctor, Dr. Yasuda felt the child could learn to walk again by using pool and she did. In April of 2012 the “Friends of the Hardtner Swimming Pool” was formed to help raise funds to restore the facility. The restoration process began nine months later. The bath house has been repainted, the pool resurfaced, and maintenance done on the filtration system, gutters, and the plumbing in the bath house. The project will be officially complete when the lift for non-mobile pool go-ers is installed.

Joy Helmer- librarian in Hardtner and Friends of Hardtner committee member said, “This was a group effort. We had over 176 donors that raised over 120,000 dollars to support this project. It is amazing. It’s how small towns work …everybody gives a little bit to make big things happen. Couldn’t have done without support of our donors.”
The H.U.G.S team is funded by Southern Pioneer Electric’s recycled materials. Any pieces of steel, aluminum or copper that have been taken out of service due to a repair or rebuild are recycled. Southern Pioneer Electric Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pioneer Electric Cooperative, is headquartered out of Ulysses, Kansas. Southern Pioneer Electric Company has local offices in Liberal and Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Southern Pioneer Electric Company serves approximately 17,200 customers and operates in 10 counties and 34 communities.
