Kansas City, MO (April 29, 2014) The Salvation Army is opening a social services center in Baxter Springs, Kansas today to provide financial assistance to residents impacted by Sunday’s tornado. 

Individuals may apply for aid for immediate needs such as food, personal care items, clothing and medicine at Trinity Worship Center, 225 E. 16th Street in Baxter Springs between 9 am and 5 pm. The Salvation Army will be offering on-site, direct assistance until further notice.    

Meanwhile, two Salvation Army mobile feeding units (canteens) remain on the scene in Baxter Springs, providing food, snacks and beverages to first responders, clean-up crews and residents. One canteen is stationary at the Baxter Springs Fire Department and the other is roaming through the community.  On Monday, 12 volunteers and staff members with The Salvation Army served 333hot and cold meals, 131 drinks and 126 snacks to individuals in need in the community. 

Sunday’s tornado in Baxter Springs destroyed more than 100 homes and businesses and injured 25 people. Salvation Army emergency disaster services (EDS) teams are also providing support and assistance to tornado-devastated areas of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Iowa, Alabama and Mississippi.
